It is believed this is why they are called "Brussels Sprout", but perhaps they should be renamed "Kabul Sprouts". The Brassicaceae family of vegetables includes Kale, Cabbage, Broccoli and our favourite, the Sprout. They have an earthy taste with a slight nutty hint and are extremely nutricious containing many minerals (such as Manganese which helps the Brain's health), Folic Acid (which helps the red blood cells) and vitamins (Vitamin K which helps the blood to clot, Vitanin C which helps the body to repair itself and grow, and Vitamin A which aids vision and ocular health). Also they are an important source of roughage which aids the digestion and promotes healthy bowel movements and smelly wind. ===== Our Soup's History ===== {{:oldcottage.jpg?200 |}}Many years ago Mrs Jenkins, a sprout farmers wife from East Anglia had a dish full of sprouts left over from a particularly good Christmas Dinner. Coming from frugal stock who did not believe in wasting food, she tried to make a soup to use the sprouts up. The results were excellent and her sprout soup became well known in the district. With the advent of the railways, travellers from London started buying the soup and taking it back home in such volume that the Mid Notfolk Railway started running dedicated Sprout trains to London's Gemmifera Street Station. Soon Mrs Jenkins finest sprout soup became a sought after apetizer in many top London hotels and the Sprout Soup company was born. Due to the international nature of London, the Sprout Soup Company was soon exporting soup all over the world, a tradition which the family is expanding on today. ===== News ===== For all the latest news in the Sprout World, please see our [[news|Sprout News]] page.
